The New Safety Standard for ITE and AV Equipment: IEC62368-1

Posted on 10-Apr-2017 11:35:00

Background of IEC62368-1

The boundaries between information technology and audio/ video technology have become increasingly blurred. For example, “when is a 15” TFT device a TV and when is it a PC monitor?” or “is a smartphone a telephone, a PC or is it a MP3 player”.   Application of safety standards such as IEC 60065 and IEC 60950-1 has led to certain devices being tested twice and sometimes there are conflicting requirements between the two product standards.  There is therefore a need for a single safety standard to replace the two existing IEC 60065 (Audio and Video) and IEC 60950-1 (Information and Communication Technology) product safety standards.

62368-1: Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment – Part 1: Safety requirements

Posted on 13-Jul-2016 14:02:16

With the convergence of information technology equipment (ITE), communication technology equipment (CTE) and audio/video equipment using common technology, cross platform architecture and use in similar environments, a new safety standard has been developed to replace the familiar 60950-1 and 60065 standards.  The new standard is hazard based and in several years time will be mandatory to use in demonstrating conformity to the Low Voltage Directive when the current standards are withdrawn in 2019.

Medical Power Supplies Standard Challenges

The general standard IEC 60601 is the accepted standard for medical equipment, especially for medical electrical equipment and general requirements for basic patient safety.
The standard 60601 is a widely accepted benchmark series for medical electrical equipment and compliance with IEC60601 has become a de-facto requirement for the commercialization of electrical medical equipment in many countries
